Often described as a mathematical transliteration of the crossword, kakuro is a type of logic puzzle. Kakuro, the Japanese name of the puzzle is abbreviation of Japanese “kasan kurosu.” Kakuro are one of the widely known puzzles in Japan, second only to Sudoku.
Kakuro puzzles are one of the most popular puzzles in the world. They are popular feature of most of the American math-and-logic puzzle publications. Kakuro puzzles are sometimes also called “Cross Sums” or “Cross Additions.”
Kakuro puzzles are the mathematical puzzles similar to crossword and Sudoku puzzles. The basic object to play a kakuro puzzle is to insert a digit from 1 to 9 inclusive into each white cell such that the sum of the numbers in each entry matches the clue associated with it and that no digit is duplicated in any entry.
A standard kakuro puzzle is usually 16×16 in size. It is played in a grid of filled and empty cells – “black” and “white”, respectively. The patterns of kakuro puzzles can vary widely depending on their levels.
There are mainly three levels of kakuro puzzles, which include kakuro easy puzzles, intermediate kakuro puzzles or medium level puzzles, and kakuro challenging or expert level puzzles.
The kakuro easy puzzles are beginners' kakuro puzzles. The kakuro easy puzzles are the level one kakuro puzzles. The kakuro easy puzzles much easier than intermediate kakuro puzzles or medium level puzzles, and kakuro challenging or expert level puzzles.

The kakuro challenging are expert level or level three puzzles. These are toughest of the kakuro puzzles. These puzzles require expert level mathematical skills from players.
